The Te Ahi o Maui Geothermal Project utilises clean, green and renewable geothermal energy of the Kawerau geothermal reservoir, while ensuring the longevity of the natural resource.
Resource Consents allows for the use of a daily average of 15,000 tonnes of geothermal fluid from the Kawerau reservoir for 35 years. Nearly 100% of this fluid will be reinjected back into the reservoir to ensure that the field is sustainable and replenished.
Hot geothermal fluid is extracted from the reservoir under the earth’s surface and is run through a system that captures it energy, spinning a turbine and generator, creating electricity. This process cools the geothermal fluid and it is then re-injected deep back into the earth to re-heat. The re-injection process ensures the volume of fluid in the reservoir and the pressure of the field are maintained, securing the sustainability of the geothermal resource.
